Norman L  Nelson
Norman L. Nelson, 89, of Oakland, OR passed away September 12th, 2016 at home.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 8th, 2016, 1 pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sutherlin, OR with Pastor Gary Krumdieck officiating.
Norman L. Nelson was born July 25, 1927 in rural Veblen, SD, the son of Henry and Mary (Swangstu) Nelson. He attended country school in Norway Township rural Veblen, SD and graduated from Oak Grove Lutheran High School, Fargo, ND in 1945. He was baptized and confirmed in Bergen Lutheran Church, Rural ND. After graduation from high school, Norman joined the US Army and serviced for 1 year. In September of 1950 he was called to serve another two years until September 1952. Between the 2 tours of duty he attended ND AC and the University of Oregon. In March of 1949 he purchased an automotive service and repair shop in Oakland which he continued operating until January of 1977. Subsequently he was a real estate broker until his retirement.
Norman enjoyed spending time traveling, fishing and gardening. He was a long standing member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dora (Carpenter) Nelson, step-daughter Janet Kuchler, step-son Stanley Kuchler and wife Tammy Kuchler, granddaughter Bethany Kuchler , great grandson Kody Kuchler and several nieces and nephews.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents Henry & Mary Nelson, brother Gordon Nelson, sister Helen McCready and first wife Ona (McCord) Nelson.
Sutherlin Chapel of Roses, Roseburg OR is coordinating funeral arrangements. Burial of cremation remains will occur at Roseburg National Cemetary on Friday September 16th with military honors.
